Holocene expansion of the Caledonian pinewoods: spatial and temporal patterns at regional and landscape scales

چکیده

Background To facilitate climatic change adaptation, landscape and conservation managers require understanding of spatio-temporal patterns expansion potential dominant species. Studying past expansions canopy-dominant trees can contribute such understanding.Aims Test hypotheses about dominants using as a model the mid-Holocene forests dominated by Pinus sylvestris in Scottish Highlands. Methods Pollen analysis radiocarbon dating Holocene sediments larger basin several small hollows were performed three landscapes along north–south transect. A records timing at scale, whilst evidence within-landscape patterns. Results Vegetation existing prior to pinewoods influenced landscape-scale P. sylvestris. Open vegetation generally was invaded earlier and/or greater extent; invasion often later, or did not occur, where woodland with substantial temperate broadleaved tree shrub component (e.g. Corylus avellana, Quercus spp.) present. Most hollows, just those became locally established, recorded during expansion. Some present forest composition established that time. Conclusions provides relevant planning management ecological adaptation species adjust their distributions abundances response change.

Study of spatial and temporal rain and drought patterns in the south of Iran using TRMM

Droughts are one of the most damaging climatic phenomena, and the most complex natural hazard  which affects the economy, agriculture, public health and environment in large areas. The aim of this study is to compare drought indicators derived from tropical rainfall measuring mission (TRMM) data in the south of Iran. Also the TRMM rainfall was considered, so as to investigate changes in the rai...

A test of spatial memory and movement patterns of bumblebees at multiple spatial and temporal scales

Naive bumblebee foragers appear to use movement rules at small spatial and temporal scales, but it is not clear whether these rules determine movement patterns as the scales increase. One strategy for efficient foraging used by bumblebees is near-far search, involving short flights when in good patches of flowers and longer flights when in poor patches. Bumblebees also demonstrate the use of a ...
